Hampshire country road closed due to icy conditions

Poles Lane will be shut for 24 hours until Friday, January 19.

Motorists are asked to use alternative routes while the closure is in place.

In a post on Facebook, Winchester police said: "A road closure is in place for Poles Lane in Otterbourne for 24 hours due to icy conditions. Access only from Hursely to Silkstead Farm.

"Please plan your journey ahead and take an alternative route."

This is a new one on me, I think - police closing a road simply because of the ice.

It was an accolade that Sergio Baldazzi could have done without. The jeweller was on his way to work in central Bologna on Wednesday morning when he spotted two traffic police holding signs indicating the maximum speed limit of 30km/h, equivalent to 18mph.

Baldazzi had been driving at a steady 25km/h, so thought he was in the clear. As he continued his journey, he picked up speed, only to come across another squad of police, this time holding speed cameras.

Baldazzi is now renowned for being the first person in the Emilia-Romagna city to be hit with a speeding ticket after leaders enacted their bitterly contested Città 30 (City 30) concept in a drive to reduce road accidents, as well as air and noise pollution. The fines kick in at 36km/h.

Bologna is the first major city in Italy to enact such a measure, which applies to its network of principle urban roads.

“I knew it was the rule’s first day, but still, I was only going at 39kmh and now I hold the medal for being the first one to be fined,” Baldazzi told the Guardian. “It’s a bit laughable really.”

'Magic' button that defrosts car windscreen in seconds leaves drivers stunned

It can be frustrating waiting around for your car to defrost in the morning

The experts say you can clear ice cover by simply activating your car windscreen fan. This will heat up the glass from the inside and therefore help to melt the frost away.

Wait, what? Cars are prosperity, retailers depend on cars being outside their shop. Say it ain't so!

Drivers 'turn bus lane into car park' along Stratford Road and locals say 'it's a problem'

Drivers are parking in a a stretch of bus lane in Hall Green, causing issues

Bob Betts, from Urban Design Flowers said: "It's a one or two hour slot and they leave their cars all day. I've spoken to them and they are lazy. If they get a £25 ticket, they say it's only once every three months so it's worth it.

"It damages our business because the customers can't park and if we lose a customer spending £30, it's a big loss to us."

Another trader who did not wish to be named said: "It's a huge problem - they just park anywhere.

"I don't say anything because I get a mouthful of abuse and they say it's nothing to do with me. We need more traffic wardens here - you don't see them that often."

'Ignored' Exeter roadblocks protestors say 'we're not surprised'

But supporters of the LTN say the decision to continue with the trial was the right one

Local resident Lorna Devenish added: "We need to be asking ourselves what future we are wanting to build for our city. What do we want to prioritise? The safety of our children or a small inconvenience for people driving around the city?

"Are we serious about beginning to decarbonise our lives, or will our resolve to do this fade at the first push back from car drivers?"

I think we need to start exporting Cornish pasties and a pint of wine in a British version of a Bento box.

Looking at Streetview, it's a typical rural road but very long and straight (old Roman road?).  I was expecting it to be narrow and windy, or steep…

The idea that it protects people is the same argument used against LTNs but equally discredited - as if drivers are going to notice much beyond the end of their bonnet or suddenly stop.

Reading the article, the cars parking in the bus lane are double parking there.  So who's parked in the actual parking spaces?  My money would be on 'the people wot work in the shops'.
