I would drive to the pub, instead of my normal cycle or walk, if I thought that might happen!

My grandfather and great uncles lived in Putney during WWII when they were on leave from active service, they always used to recount how if it seemed likely an air raid was imminent they would get down to the Rose and Crown down the hill because if the siren blew the landlord would let everyone down into the cellars to shelter - some very memorable nights ensued, apparently!

Well, thanks for helping re-kindle this unpleasant memory, which one cut price student movie night at the Roxy I had the dubious fortune to sit through.

This tended to happen because the main feature we'd turned up to see was full and the 2nd screen (yes that's all there was in those days, and it was located in the city centre, not next to Curry's and a TGI Fridays).  But then that's how I came to see The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer, so lose some, win some.

It's even better than you described! Check out the place names!

"One Anglian Water driver was forced to abandon their van in Wash Lane in Combs Ford"

Who knew places with historical names featuring water might get wet?

Used to live in Combs ford many years ago and it is aptly named you'd still find a big puddle on Wash lane in the middle of summer, it literally is just a lane that drives through the river, this was July last year.

Perhaps there is an upside.

10 tipsy drivers driving from the pub
10 tipsy drivers driving from the pub
And if 10 tipsy get caught up in the flood
There'd be no tipsy drivers driving from the pub...

I expect the driver thought nobody would notice - after all, it's a black pipe, and it was dark at the time:

This is a year old, but here's a Texas driver having some real problems transporting a bit of lumber. And understanding geometry.

Somehow these people manage to tie their own shoes and use credit cards.

Council forced to apologise over Exmouth car park crisis

The expansion of permit parking zones across Exmouth and East Devon District Council reintroducing £2 all-day parking again this winter is being blamed for huge pressure being put on car parks in the town

Combination of new resident parking schemes and the off season £2 daily charge for off-street.  Oh no drivers, you've got your cheap parking, but you've used it all up.  How much of the town will you now demolish to solve the problem?

Also Tavistock

Janna says if people need to queue for tickets, even if they are free for the first hour, and deal with complicated parking machines, they will just bypass the town and go to Morrisons.

Dartmouth battles against new pay & display parking

There has already been more than 2,000 objections to the Devon County Council proposal

"Businesses are struggling at the present moment. As we all know, there's a cost of living crisis and for people to have to pay on-street for their parking is going to have a detrimental effect on our businesses, our cafes, our restaurants and our shops. So your whole business model relies on custom from drivers short-cutting back and forth through residential streets to visit your store? You'd be complaining if you were in an LTN and you're complaining for being outside of it.

When you didn't realise that London was a part of the North:

Quote:

There was anger and exasperation on Wednesday after the Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed funding “for each London borough to ensure millions of road users enjoy smoother and safer journeys”.

The £235m of London pothole money was possible only because of £8.3bn of extra investment which came from scrapping HS2.

In a social media announcement with a photograph of a worker driving a road roller, the London scheme is billed as a Network North project.

This must surely be a parody book ?!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ULEZ-Files-Motorists-Every-Could/dp/B0CQJ37Z68/...

"Max's passion for cars symbolises not just a personal crusade but a wider fight for civil liberties against the backdrop of environmental exploitation and political corruption. This novel is a testament to the courage of individuals standing up against a tide of deceit and tyranny, where the roar of engines and the clash of ideologies reverberate through the streets of London.!

Have we had this yet?

Four years is hardly sufficient. The Police should now explore whether they can find evidence against those these pair "helped" and if so, bring charges against them.... yes, I know, a funny from Ian. The Police actually taking traffic offenses seriously..... as if.

Staffordshire villagers 'ask drivers nicely' to stop speeding.

BBC News in Weston-under-Lizard, on the old A5 route east of Telford.

So laws are not enough, we have to stand at the side of the road and beg people to slow down a bit. I'd prefer a flashing sign that says 'Slow down or you get a brick through your windscreen'. Happy to do my bit and stand there holding the brick.

Not far away on the A518 in Telford, 2 speed cameras at Trench Lock Interchange in Telford have captured nearly 12,000 speeding shitheads during 2023.

https://www.shropshirestar.com/news/features/2023/12/26/shropshires-most...

Edited to add some more Shropshire Star news: No rest for emergency services on Christmas Day - a car flipped on the B5476 near Whitchurch at about 6pm. Earlier in the day paramedics and a fire crew were required after a single occupant vehicle left the A41 near Hinstock at around 4pm, crashing through a fence, narrowly missing a telegraph pole and coming to rest against a garage. The dickhead driver thankfully only had minor injuries.

Council owed £120,000 by fine evading drivers

This story is interesting because of the table included - drivers always make out that they've been slapped with a fine and that The Terminator will come after them until it's paid.

The "council pockets" in the sub headline grinds my gears too. If you look at the amount of fines collected, the total "pocketed" is £370,160.

ASDA car park in the news again:

The incident involved a black Honda Jazz. One of the pedestrians, a woman from Cambridge, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital while the other, a man in his 70s, suffered minor injuries.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "The driver of the Honda Jazz, a man in his 80s, from Cambridge, stayed at the scene and is helping with officers with their inquiries.

Frostenden drink driver, 73, had taken cat to be put down

Mrs Rushmere said she did not want to be considered for a drink driving rehabilitation course, as she had been considering giving up driving before this incident occurred.

“I don’t enjoy driving anymore. The roads are not for the elderly,” she said.

Poor little me - anything to distract from the drink-driving.
