At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

To be mated with the excellent ENO hub, White Industries manufacture a splined fixed gear cogs made out of 8620 case hardened steel, 78 grams of it for a 18T cog to be exact. The cogs are precision cut to mate to the fixed gear hub, rather than the traditional screw on method.

Time will tell if it is a better union between cog and hub but it certainly looks to be, both on paper and in the flesh. There is no apparent taper on the spline interface so play could perhaps develop but the tolerance is very tight and the quality of materials is very high and that should be enough for it be trouble free for a long, long time. The cogs are available in sizes 14t-20t in both 3/32" and 1/8" widths. A standard English 1.29 x 24 tpi threaded lock ring is needed to keep the cog in place. Once mounted to the White Industries ENO hub there is no play and no slip, just a solid connection and direct power delivery that you can depend on, ideal for those who like to skid or punish their knees with resistance braking.

Verdict

Splined fixed rear cog for ENO hub. Solid cog with zero movement giving reliable power delivery to your back wheel. Ideal for those who skid.

Potentially a very long time but without a taper on the spline, play could develop between the cog and the hub but the tolerances are high so this might never happen.
